Welcome to our Current Event Blog



As part of our 6th grade Social Studies curriculum, students are required to keep up with current events throughout the world. Specifically, students should be checking the news for information related to our current units of study. This blog was designed with the intention of providing a forum for students to share and discuss the current events that they come across on a daily basis. Feel free to share and respectfully comment about recent news events that have caught your interest. Remember, opportunities for extra credit are available dependent upon the quality and professionalism of your post. In order to earn an extra credit point, students must provide the following information when posting:

1. The title of the article
2. The name of the newspaper, magazine, internet site, etc. where you found the article
3. Identify the country and continent where the current event happened
4. Include a 2 or 3 sentence description of what the article was about.

Here is an example of an appropriate post.

On Wednesday, August 11, a man robbed a Susquehanna Bank in Ephrata, Lancaster County. The robbery took place around 10:30 am and the robber was able to escape. According to police, the robber was described as a white male, wearing sunglasses, a hat, a white t-shirt and shorts.

    On Friday morning, Dauphin County Prison went in to a lockdown after prison inmates assaulted another with a weapon. The victim got a six inch cut due to this event.

    University students of harrisburg discovered in marland over the weekend a dolphin skull. They were digging up what they thought was a whale skull, but it turned out to be a dolphin skull.

    On this past date,9/11, people came out to mourn the people they new on the planes that crashed. 3 planes crashed in 3 different areas,The Pentagon,The World Trade Center,and here in Pennsylvania in a field.

  4. The Eiffel Tower Evacuated after a bomb threat.

    On Tuesday evening an anonymous caller phoned in a bomb threat.Notre Dame and a few other tourist sites had to be evacuated due to similar threats.Throughout the town about 2,000 people had to clear the area.There were police everywhere checking for a suspicious people,things,ect.

  5. Stolen credit card used for $5,500 in purchases.

    A woman from Lititz reported to police that $300 in cash and 2 credit cards were stolen from her vehicle when it was parked at Manheim Township High School. A short time later, the cards were used for a $5000 purchases.The store cameras caught two women entering together. The Manheim Township police are looking for information on their identities.

  6. 4 men charged in shooting death of 15 year-old

    Three 19 year-olds and one 16 year-old were charged in shooting a 15 year-old they approached him and some of his friends early sunday morning. He was beaten and shot numerous times. They then stole his shoes and ran off. It was unprovoked.

  7. A Motorcyclist was Killed in a Crash

    On Route 214 in Springfield Township the crash happened. State police say a car traveling in the opposite direction hit the motorcycle.

  8. Book Sale Starts

    Lancaster County Public Library started its annual Fall ReSort book sale Thursday, September 16. Over 20,000 fiction and nonfiction books are being sold at as low as 50 cents a paperback. The library will also be selling DVDs, audiobooks, and videos. The sale lasts until Sunday. Sale hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Sunday, everything is half-priced.

  10. Google Adds Extra Security Steps to E-Mail

    Google made it harder for computer hackers to get into e-mail accounts! An added security measure requires a six-digit code after the Google password is entered. The extra step makes it harder for hackers.
    People using Gmail will be able to make the extra security part of their regular login in the next few months.

  11. TMI's turbine generator shuts down

    Three Mile Island unit 1 reactor was shut down after the generator stopped working. The system kept functioning correctly which sent the steam up and caused a loud explosion that shook a few neighborhoods. A representative said, however, that the plant and the people were never in danger. There was no explosions or threat to the people's health or safety.

  12. Wind Turbines added on Turkey Hill Dairy's Land

    The first of two 397 foot wind tubines have ceen assembled on Turkey Hill Dairy's land. The generators are scheduled to start generating electric in December. The project is a partnership between Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority and PPL.

  13. Former Pastor Charged

    Arthur Burton (nicknamed "A.B.") Schirmer, was a former pastor of a United Methodist church in Bainbridge and Marietta. A.B. was charged last Sunday for killing his second wife, Betty, and making it look like a car accident. Knowing that, police are investigating the death of his first wife, Jewel, whom they thought died falling down a flight of stairs in 1999.

  15. Tropical Storm Matthew Threatens Central America

    This past Friday 10,000 people evacuated Nicaragua so they can move away from Tropical Storm Matthew. It has already caused disastrous flooding and 45 mile an hour winds. It may also cause mudslides. The Red Cross Association is helping out for the people who are injured. Also another storm, Lisa, is coming that way too.

  16. High-ranking leaders of the Pennsylvania State Police say unsubstantiated or needlessly inflammatory listings in a series of state homeland security bulletins caused problems for their operations.
    The head of the state police's criminal investigation division testified at a Pennsylvania Senate hearing Monday regarding the notices on threats to infrastructure produced by the Institute of Terrorism Research and Response for the state Office of Homeland Security. Maj. George Bivens said some of the alerts resulted in a waste of manpower to address nonexistent threats.
    Gov. Ed Rendell is not renewing the institute's contract when it expires next month and is no longer distributing its alerts. He has described the information as useless.

  17. Stink Bugs Invade Homes,Damage Crops

    Orchard owner says stink bugs damage about 20% of this years peach crop.
    Dairy Farmers are afraid cow will eat dead stink bugs and make the milk smell bad.
    Stink bugs entered the U.S. 12 years ago around Allentown,Pa, but they were expected not to be a nuisance.
    There is no way to get rid of them, but they are doing research on how to get rid of them without killing other necessary bugs and crops.

    Gov.Rendell called for a state emergency because of the severe weather.
    He closed schools early as well as public offices & county offices at 1 PM.
    They are expecting major flooding of all creeks and rivers. This will be the fifth-highest flood stage on record!

  19. Fisher-Price recalls more than 11M kids products

    Two of the items recalled are Trikes and Tough Trikes. They were recalled because a child can hit, or fall onto the plastic ignition key and hurt themselves.10 children were hurt, and 6 needed medical attention. Other items were recalled because the could be a choking hazard.

  20. Champion Horse Breaks Neck in Paddock Fall

    Real Quiet's (the racehorse) racing days are over forever. Mike Jester, Penn Ridge Farms owner, says the former champion racehorse died after a fall in his paddock. Jester said the horse broke his neck after his left shoulder hit the ground.
    Real Quiet beat the Victory Gallop in both the Derby and the Preakness. Real Quiet barely missed the Triple Crown in 1998. The horse won the Hollywood Gold Cup and Pimlico Special at age 4 before being retired to stud. Real Quiet raised more than $3 million in his career.

  21. Man Rescued From Manure Pit After Accident

    Police in Berks County say that a man was pitched into a 15-foot-deep manure pit after the loader the man was operating shot over a chain-link fence. The emergency crews for Berks County rushed to the scene and rescued the 28 year-old man. The man may have been trying to dump more manure when the loader tumbled over the fence and into the pit because it was too top-heavy, Officer Alan Swartz speculated. The loader needed to be pulled out by a heavy-duty tow truck.

  22. Police Gas Station Fight Leads to Arrest

    A gas station fight between a 23-year-old man and a Shippensburg University police sergeant lead to the arrest of the man, Lucas Campbell.
    The local police say Lucas Campbell resisted arrest and injured the University Sergeant early Friday morning at the Sheetz along King Street in Shippensburg. According to the police, when the University Sgt. Scott Bradnick tried to take Campbell into custody, Campbell knocked him to the ground and injured him. Lucas Campbell fled but was later caught and sent to the Cumberland County Prison.

    So Obama wants to make the school day and year longer. For one it will cost so much money and take so much time. If that would happen no one would take place in sports or school instruments.     San Francisco has a long history of bold public health and environment stances. San Francisco's gone after everything from plastic bags in grocery stores to cigarettes in sugary drinks. Now its next target is Ronald McDonald.
    The city will ban McDonald's from putting toys in Happy Meals unless McDonald's adds fruit or vegetables and lowers calories.

  25. Truck Slams Into car, Killing the Driver

    74-year-old Barbara Fink died after her car was hit on Harrisburg Pike. The accident happened at about 3:00 PM Friday. The state police said that Fink was stopped at a stop sign and didn't see the oncoming truck. Then, when Fink pulled out, the truck hit her car and pushed it 85 feet. Barbara Fink was taken to Penn State Hershey Medical Center, but sadly died on the way there.

    A train crashed into another killing 36. Halik Rudianto was the driver of a 1st class train when it crashed and hit an economy-class train. He has been accused of not stopping at a stop signal. I found guilty he may face 6 1/2 years in prison

  29. Sidewalk reopens after building collapse

    On Fridasy April 18,a large second-floor section of the three-storey building's facade collapsed, sending an avalanche of bricks tumbling to the sidewalk below. The collpase of the building is unknown, no one was injered.

    In the rebel territory, Tobruk, Libya rebels are going to the front lines once again because of Gadhafi's attack. Gadhafi planned to attack Benghazi on March 20, 2011. With the help of foreign military help the Libyans fought it off. It was said if Gadhafi would have had the explosives hit there, he would have surely taken control over Benghazi. Now because of this attack, libyans are going to fight Gadhafi's soldiers.
